City of Sanibel, SCCF And “Ding” Darling Partner To Research Sanibel Water Quality
“The quality of the water draining from the Sanibel River and freshwater lakes on the island has come under scrutiny by the City of Sanibel, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) Marine Lab, and the JN “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge.
As for past important conservation projects, the three island entities have formed a partnership to research solutions and monitor waters flowing in and out of the Gulf of Mexico and Ladyfinger Lakes, the latter of which in turn drain into Tarpon Bay on refuge property.
The refuge provides habitat for endangered species such as manatees, small-toothed sawfish and Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle, but there is little to no buffer between the refuge and urban land uses, such as golf courses and residential development.”
