It continues to be important to not get complacent and not forget the impact of Hurricane Charley!

The Captiva Civic Association will be hosting a Huricane Preparation Seminar today, Wednesday at 2 PM at the Captiva Civic Center.

“Learn what first responders do and what residents should do in the event of a storm evacuation or return to the island.

Guest speakers include NBC Weather Team’s Kristen Kirchhaine who will discuss the 2016 hurricane season, including the possible effects of the end of El Nino and start of La Nina. Kirchhaine loves telling the weather story and believes being prepared for adverse weather is incredibly important.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will present “How to Secure Your Boat for Rough Weather” and Lee
County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit Deputy Tim Babor will talk derelict vessels – legal definitions and

responsibilities for boat owners, as well as removal of boats from state waters. Lee County Emergency Operation Center’s Chief of Emergency Management Jim Bjostad will present “Respect the Wind, Fear the Surge.”

Following the program, hurricane passes for return to Captiva via Sanibel will be available. Residents should bring proof of residency and, if possible, a completed hurricane pass application available at www.mysanibel.org and at the Captiva Memorial Library, 11550 Chapin Lane. There will be time for questions and answers with the experts.

The seminar is free of charge and attendees will have the chance to win raffle prizes.

About the Captiva Hurricane Preparation and Response Committee

The Captiva Hurricane Preparation and Response Committee is an independent group of community volunteers who started to meet after Hurricane Charley a decade ago. The committee aims to improve preparation for a storm and communications before, during and after a storm. The committee is also dedicated to supporting first responders so they can focus on what they must do in the event of an emergency.
