The City Of Sanibel issued the following news release this afternoon.
“Our first sea turtle nest on Island has just recently hatched, producing a total of 81 hatchlings! Below is a video of Kelly Sloan from SCCF with some more information regarding Sea Turtle nesting/hatchling season.
Please do your part to protect sea turtles by keeping lights off and our beaches dark!
HOW TO HELP
· Turn off/shield ALL lights visible from the beach
· Close curtains or blinds BY 9 PM
· AVOID using flashlights/illuminated cell phones
· NEVER shine light on nesting turtles
· NO flash photography after dark
· Remove ALL beach furniture BY 9 PM
· Fill holes/level sandcastles after your beach day
· Pick up ALL TRASH
Violations of the City’s sea turtle protection ordinances may be subject to City, State, and/or Federal fines and penalties and should be reported immediately to the Sanibel Police Department (239) 472-3111, Sanibel Code Enforcement (239) 472-4136, OR Natural Resources at (239) 472-3700.”
