Sanibel BIG ARTS 2015-16 Season Schedule Released.

BIG ARTS mission is to provide quality cultural and educational experiences in the arts to the residents and visitors of Sanibel, Captiva, and neighboring communities.   Please see the BIG ARTS calendar.

Known as Sanibel and Captiva’s home for all the arts, BIG ARTS has been providing cultural enrichment and fulfillment to island residents and visitors since 1979. BIG ARTS began when a group of artists dreamed of a cultural center on the island. Today, BIG ARTS members and participants enjoy a wide spectrum of performing and visual arts events, and the community participates in more than 250 educational classes and workshops each year.

Treat yourself to time at BIG ARTS on Sanibel. Relax in the beautiful garden, view the art in the galleries, visit the gift shop, and learn about the variety of events the islands’ dynamic cultural arts center has to offer. Whether your interest is in classical, jazz, or popular music; dance; the visual arts; lectures; film or live theater; or in attending a class or workshop—BIG ARTS has something for everyone!

Events

Each year during “season,” BIG ARTS presents world-renowned music and dance, professional theater, distinguished speakers, fine art exhibits, and critically acclaimed films.

• Entertainers including jazz, pop, classical, folk, western, and big band musicians perform in BIG ARTS 409-seat Schein Performance Hall.
• BIG ARTS 164-seat Herb Strauss Theater presents professional live theater and offers Broadway-caliber talent in an intimate atmosphere.
• Phillips and Founders galleries each host new exhibits monthly during season, providing an enriching visual arts experience and promoting the diverse talents of local, regional, and national artists.
• BIG ARTS presents exciting dance programs every season, from classical ballet to contemporary dance performances.
• Many distinguished and influential speakers lecture at the popular and often sold-out series, The FORUM.
• The Film Society presents the fabulous Monday night series of critically acclaimed feel-good films and documentaries, while the Film Academy offers several cinematic series with thought-provoking film discussions; Wednesday matinees, film festivals, and presentations by local filmmakers are also popular.
• The gift shop at the main BIG ARTS center, located at 900 Dunlop Road, is a place to find unique gifts of affordable luxury.
• There are also weekly current events discussion groups, and several community events throughout the year.

Classes and Workshops

More than 250 opportunities to study something new are offered at BIG ARTS each year. With an abundance of choices, including painting, drawing, dance, pottery, languages, photography, jewelry-making, fused glass, collage, writing, music, and technology, there is something for everyone—for adults as well as youth.

Our Winter Academy offers a chance to delve into subjects on a more in-depth basis—more than a single lecture, but less than a college course. Learn about art, music, economics, international law, and religion from academic professors.
