“The ‘Ding’ Darling Refuge staff was a robust 23 in 2005, but today has recoiled to 11 due to several budget cuts.

“We’ve had positions eliminated because of budget cuts, but also just some that are vacant,” said Tritaik. “We have a fairly high turnover rate. We are a very busy refuge. People come here for experience, then move on.”

‘Ding’ Darling makes up for the vacated positions by contracting help from the surrounding area. The refuge currently has about 20 contracts for everything from invasive species control to guest relations help.”
