Hogfish, The Fishing Guides’ Secret And The Best Tasting Fish Off Sanibel & Captiva!
Although not as popular or well known as grouper or redfish, some fishermen in the know would argue hogfish is the best tasting fish caught off Sanibel & Captiva Islands!
Generally caught just offshore on wrecks and structure, hogfish are both pretty to look at and great to eat! While a matter of taste, many local fishing guides consider the hogfish or hog snapper the “best eating” fish to be caught!
Here’s some background on hogfish from FWC.
“Hogfish are a reef species that inhabit rocky bottoms, ledges and reefs throughout Florida’s off-shore waters. They are easily identified by their long, hog-like snout, which allows them to feed on bottom-dwelling mollusks and crustaceans.
Because they tend to root in the sediment in search of small prey, they are not commonly caught on hook and line. Hogfish are primarily harvested by spearfishing, and they are considered to be of excellent food quality.”
