The Sanibel-Captiva Art League’s annual Summer Art Exhibit is being held in the Sanibel Public Library, 770 Dunlop Road through October 6. The exhibit includes Tropical scenes in watercolor, oil and acrylic, many which were done during the art league’s Thursday Paint-outs!

The Sunday Sanibel Farmers Market is back again this year!
Starting Oct. 5 through April 26, it is open every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sanibel City Hall, 800 Dunlop Road on Sanibel Island.

Loggerhead Sea Turtle, Ding Darling Saving Sea Turtles Exhibit
“DING” DARLING SAVING SEA TURTLES EXHIBIT
The Refuge unveiled its latest Saving Sea Turtles exhibit in the free “Ding” Darling Visitor & Education Center on Friday, August 29, 2014.
The new exhibit was made possible by a West Coast Inland Navigation District (WCIND) grant and other gifts to the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society.
“This newest exhibit is so important to sea turtle conservation,” said supervisory refuge ranger Toni Westland.

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT BY AL HOFFACKER @ “DING” DARLING
JN “Ding” Darling Wildlife Refuge Visitor & Education Center is presenting a free Wildlife Photography Exhibit by Al Hoffacker through October 31.
All photos presented depict only native wildlife from local estuaries, freshwater wetlands and the Florida Everglades. The photos are strictly the images as seen through the lens of the camera by the photographer.
Come meet Al Hoffacker at the refuge’s Visitor Center on Saturday, October 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. in Auditorium B, and again on Tuesday, October 14 from 1 to 3 p.m.

SANIBEL & CAPTIVA WADE FISHING
Sam Kirkland reflected on his year’s at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and shared some best Sanibel & Captiva wade fishing tips before he leaves the agency! Here is what he had to share.
- Watch your tides. Never fish a low tide.
- High tides can be tricky as well. If the water isn’t moving, the bait is not moving.
- Get a pair of wading shoes or diving boots and wear them religiously. There are a lot of sting rays out there.
- Fish on a stringer. Make sure you have a long stringer and let them float away from you. In 25 years, Kirkland only had one problem with a shark coming for his fish, but he says he sure was glad those fish weren’t right next to him.
- Think like a fly fisherman and “match for the hatch” by using bait on which fish are feeding. Kirkland prefers finger mullet, alewives and bull minnows.
- Don’t overfill your bait bucket. You only need 10 to 20 specimens at a time. More than that can kill the bait.
- Protect yourself from the sun. Kirkland wears long sleeves, a hat, a Buff and good polarizing sunglasses and says all are a must.
- Of course, make sure you have something to cover the buttons on your shirt if you plan to use a cast net for bait.
