As the holiday season comes to a close Sanibel’s Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge is open to the public this New Years Day and will host free holiday wildlife drives throughout 2015.
Free dates include: January 19th Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, February 14-16 – Presidents’ Day Weekend, September 26 – National Public Lands Day, October 11 – First Sunday of National Wildlife Refuge Week, and November 11 – Veterans Day.
Locals and tourists alike are also encouraged to take advantage of the refuge’s free daily hikes, walks and programs from January 6th through April 12th. Whether by car, bike or on foot visitors can explore Sanibel’s birds, wildlife, shells, plant life and the history of the Calusa indian shell mounds. Most tours span no more than 90 minutes and take off all over the island.
Programs held at the Cross Dike Pavillion, unless otherwise indicated, allow visitors of all ages to learn more about their favorite Sanibel wildlife from manatees, crocs and gators to venomous snakes and birds of prey. These sessions span just 30 minutes and may be an easier way for kids and seniors to learn about the islands.
