Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation Opposes Florida Fracking Bill 318.
The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) issued the following news release this afternoon.
Vote No on SB 318
“There are two very serious problems with this bill that the committee will vote on tomorrow, Thursday, February 25th.
1. The definition in the bill is very narrow and will not address the predominant form of fracking performed in Florida limestone. As a result, the low pressure acid fracking that dissolves limestone, will not be regulated or studied. Proponents of this bill are suggesting the definition will regulate fracking in Florida; however, the narrow language will specifically not address the predominant form of fracking performed.
Do not be misled, the bills definition will not regulate low pressure acid fracking with corrosive chemicals, or the use of and contamination of ground water.
2. The bill includes a preemption of local municipalities, stripping them of current authority they have to approve or deny drilling within their jurisdictions. This is just bad public policy as taxpayers have less of a voice in activities that affect their investments and quality of life.
Please take action by pressing this link and send your message to the Senate Appropriations Committee. Thank you.”
