Sanibel receives $4,000 Lee County bed tax-funded grant to promote bicycle safety!

The grant’s purpose is to … “help the city of Sanibel develop a short video promoting the island’s popular shared-use path and educating users on bicycle safety.

“You can’t go to Sanibel without seeing visitors on that bike path,” Prather noted.

A 2012 City of Sanibel survey showed more than 4,500 cyclists used the shared use path for pedestrians and bicyclists during sample times of four hours on a Thursday afternoon and four hours on a Saturday in late April. That’s more than 50 percent greater than bicycle traffic reported during similar time frames in 2006.

Sanibel had requested $25,000; however, City Manager Judie Zimomra said on Friday: “We can do a lot with four grand. Sanibel is known for being resourceful.”
