“In 2010 a dedicated group of Islanders funded the Captiva History Project. Capturing Island stories told by old friends and neighbors, they hoped the reminiscences of people who remembered Old Captiva would preserve this bit of Island history. The film ”Captiva Memories” – oral histories of ten Islanders – was shown to a standing room only audience in the Spring of 2011. From this beginning, the Captiva Island Historical Society was founded with the mission to preserve and interpret the history of Captiva Island.
From its beginnings as a farming island in the early 1900s, to its evolution into a tropical paradise that attracted artists and writers, fishermen and Presidents, regular folks and off-beat Island characters, Captiva stories are our stories. Anne Morrow Lindbergh wrote ‘Gift from the Sea’ on Captiva. Teddy Roosevelt fished the waters off Captiva, and Robert Rauschenberg called Captiva his home and studio.
Old photographs and film, letters and newspaper clippings record the events that have shaped our past. We will preserve these treasures and continue to add to our collection. We will also continue the tradition established by The Captiva History Project by recording the oral histories of folks with old stories to share.”
