Midweek Red Tide Update (October 17, 2014)

“Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, was not detected in samples analyzed so far this week in and alongshore of Bay, Gulf, Franklin, Wakulla, Taylor, Dixie, Levy, or Pasco counties.  In southwest Florida, several samples collected in and alongshore of Charlotte and Lee counties contained background to low concentrations of K. brevis.

Satellite images from the Optical Oceanography Laboratory at the University of South Florida show bloom patches offshore of Franklin, Wakulla, Jefferson, and Taylor counties in the northwest Gulf of Mexico and along and offshore of the Sanibel Island area (Charlotte and Lee counties) in southwest Florida. Samples along and offshore of Charlotte and Lee counties confirm a bloom of K. brevis in this region.

Other samples collected throughout Florida so far this week did not contain K. brevis.”
